JHMI Point of Care Software

James H. Nichols, MD.

The Johns Hopkins Point of Care software suite is a collection of client-server applications designed to extract test results from POCT devices and transfer the test results to a central database.  The client applications are designed to extract data from the AccuCheck GTS glucose meter and the HemoCue Hemoglobin-B hemoglobin meter.  The test results are made available for queries and report generation immediately after the data has been inserted into a central database.  The POCT software suite includes a Microsoft Access-based interface to a central database.  Using this interface, POCT managers can monitor patients, operatorss, QC & QA tests, and the transmissions of meter contents.  The sever application is designed for the Oracle relational database management system.

The process of collecting data is partitioned into two phases.  The first phase is the extraction of data from the POCT devices.  The second phase of the collection process is the transmission of test results to a central database.  Test results are transmitted through the internet to the server application for insertion into a central database.  The server application checks the data against the database to avoid inserting duplicate data into the central database.  All transmissions are logged to maintain a record of when data was transmitted and where the data originated.
