Pathologists' Workstation
|

| Gerald Rottman, M.D. |
The Pathologists' Workstation, or Immunology Workstation, is a computer application that facilitates interpretation of electrophoretic gels by the Clinical Pathologist in the Immunology Laboratory. Developed by Pathology Data Systems at Johns Hopkins Hospital, this package manages the assembly and presentation of demographic, clinical, and laboratory data and provides an interface for the rendering of a billable, clinical interpretation. Since Congress sharply circumscribed professional billing in clinical pathology, most hospitals have not found it practical to fulfill the requirements imposed on clinical interpretations of the few laboratory tests for which professional billing is still permitted. We expect that, as laboratory medicine becomes increasingly complex and specialized, interpretation of results by the clinical pathologist will become increasingly important. The Immunology Workstation illustrates computer technology that facilitates this process. Future work will generalize the Workstation to other areas of laboratory medicine. |
