| The Johns Hopkins
Pathology Data System (PDS) is a comprehensive laboratory
information system (LIS) operated by the Department of Pathology
that serves all areas of anatomic and clinical pathology at
Johns Hopkins. PDS consists of LIS support that includes
surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy
coverage. PDS has an integrated Oracle repository
with real-time link for test result archiving and ad hoc
queries, integrated secure web servers for patient data
reporting, and extensive network connectivity to the Johns
Hopkins EPR system, along with connectivity to other clinical
and administrative systems.
The hub of many ongoing Pathology Informatics
software development projects is a Data
Warehouse with data not
only from PDS but also from the comparable LIS at Bayview
hospital, along with point of care data generated at Johns
Hopkins, Bayview and several outlying sites. The warehouse
aggregates selected data from the Johns Hopkins electronic
patient record and from additional stand-alone laboratory data
sources for use in patient care, teaching and research.
PDS also includes a free-text diagnosis search
that allows flexible case retrieval by diagnosis words.
Users retrieve cases by Boolean combinations of diagnosis words,
and can filter results in a variety of ways including case type,
physician, or availability of tumor bank samples. This
test-free retrieval system is used many times a day in research
studies, case lookup and for teaching.
Another system developed and managed by PDS is
the Pathologists'
Workstation. The Workstation is a package that manages
the assembly and presentation of demographic, clinical, and
laboratory data and provides an interface for the rendering of a
billable, clinical interpretation of that data. |
