Johns Hopkins Informatics researchers are extremely active in the development of novel software ideas and prototypes.  Catalyurek, Saltz and Miller have developed software to store, retrieve, manipulate and view datasets captured from an entire glass slide, using a multiprocessor data server and locally storing or caching copies of all data retrieved from the database server. This software is an integral part of a project known as The Virtual Microscope Client, a client-server system designed to provide a realistic digital emulation of a high power light microscope.

The group also is well known for research results in scalable distributed database software.  The Active Data Repository is a high-end database developed by Saltz is used in many discipline areas outside of Pathology .  The informatics groups also has developed DataCutter and MetaChaos software designed to couple disparate databases and application programs.  All of these systems run on heterogeneous collections of data servers, computer clusters and parallel machines.  Taylor, Saltz and Miller have been developing software and algorithms for carrying out datamining and complex queries that make use of hierarchical data relationships expressed in ontologies.
