PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pathology offers a one or two year Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry (ComACC) approved fellowship to provide MD pathologists and PhD scientists with the analytical, clinical, research and management experience towards specialization and board certification in clinical chemistry (American Board of Clinical Chemistry).

The program is designed to provide training in the operation of a clinical laboratory, quality control and assurance, laboratory management, analytical methodologies and test interferences. The fellow will acquire a basic understanding of analytical chemistry techniques, the diagnostic relevance of tests and their clinical interpretation. Service aspects of the program involve clinical consultation and problem solving leading to on-call (pager) responsibility as a Chemistry Resource Person. Fellows rotate through routine automated chemistry (high volume testing), critical care/emergency medicine (blood gases, stat testing), special chemistry (immunoassay for endocrine function and tumor markers, trace metal analysis), and toxicology (analysis of therapeutic and abused drugs) laboratories, as well as immunology, hematology, and molecular diagnostics laboratories. The first year of the program begins with an 8-week clinical rotation covering the fundamentals of all areas of clinical chemistry. In-depth pre-analytical/automation, general and special chemistry, and drug assay rotations as well as rotations in other Pathology Laboratories are completed in the first year. Throughout the program, the fellow will present seminars and attend departmental and divisional meetings.

Participation in clinical laboratory oriented research projects will allow the fellow to gain a working knowledge of analytical and quality control goals and managing day-to-day activities. Research projects could involve method development, test validation, diagnostic utility and cost effectiveness of testing or other clinical and scientific investigations in any of the areas within clinical chemistry. The fellow will be expected to learn the basic principles of clinical chemistry and apply this knowledge as a director-trainer of a high volume clinical laboratory. During the two-year fellowship, trainees will also complete an applied laboratory oriented research projects and develop expertise in a specific area of research with a selected faculty member. In addition, there are opportunities to conduct translational research in the field of clinical proteomics through the Center for Biomarker Discovery at Johns Hopkins University. The structure of the program is flexible to afford individualized training based on previous experience.
