During this
post-residency fellowship program, of one or
preferably two years duration, the fellow will
gain advanced experience in diagnosis, teaching,
and research in clinical cytopathology.
Diagnostic material consists of a wide variety of
gynecologic and nongynecologic specimens.
Performance of superficial fine needle
aspirations and on-site assessment of guided deep
aspirates provides the trainee with extensive
expertise in this popular technique. Fellows are
given increasing responsibility in cytopathology
sign-out as they acquire experience, and
participate as instructors in an internationally
acclaimed continuing medical education program.
Research opportunities in immunocytochemistry,
morphometry and applied molecular pathology are
available.The second year provides advanced
experience in diagnostic cytopathology and
research and is tailored according to the trainee's
interests and career paths. Goals of the program
include preparation for a career in academic
cytopathology and preparation for the American
Board of Pathology Added Qualification in
Cytopathology exam, although fellows will find
themselves superbly trained for a community
practice in Cytopathology.

PLEASE
HELP US TO CELEBRATE THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF OUR
MENTOR, COLLEAGUE, AND FRIEND THROUGH SUPPORTING
THE FELLOWSHIP IN HIS HONOR.
Dr.
Erozan was born in Ankara, Turkey in 1930 during
his father's tenure as a member of Parliament.
His father was a well-known poet, linguist, and
teacher. After his father died from lung cancer
in 1935 (at the age of 52), Yener's mother took
Yener and his younger brother home to Istanbul.
Yener says he knew from early childhood that he
wanted to be a doctor; he never considered
another profession. After graduating from the
University of Istanbul School of Medicine in 1954,
Dr. Erozan participated in consecutive residency
programs at Haydarpasa Numune Hospital in
Istanbul with Professor Muammer Yenerman (1956-1959)
and a second one at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda
with Colonel James E. Ash (1959-1962). Dr. Erozan
became a Fellow in Cytopathology under the
directorship of John K. Frost, M.D. when he came
to the Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine in July 1962. Subsequently in July 1964,
Dr Erozan accepted the position of Instructor in
Pathology. He returned to Turkey the following
year as Instructor in Pathology at Hacettepe
University School of Medicine where he stayed
until 1968. In December 1968, Dr. Erozan resumed
his remarkable career at Hopkins when he accepted
the position of Assistant Professor in Pathology.
In July 1975, he was promoted to Associate
Professor, and in January 1989, he assumed the
Directorship of the John K. Frost Cytopathology
Laboratory. In May 1995, he was promoted to
Professor of Pathology.
Dr.
Erozan's love of teaching is embodied in his
prolific publications. During a distinguished
career, which has spanned more than 40 years, Dr.
Erozan has generated over 90 peer-reviewed
articles, 13 non-peer reviewed articles, 14 book
chapters, 2 books and a variety of multi-media
teaching materials. In addition, he continues to
be involved in numerous classrooms, national and
international CME instructional activities. The
continued success of the world-renown
Postgraduate Institute for Pathologists in
Clinical Cytopathology established by Dr. John K.
Frost is a testament to his leadership. Today he
continues to be involved in the Division's
abbreviated "Institute" as Director
Emeritus. In addition to his significant
contributions as an educator, Yener Erozan has
embraced clinical and research technologies that
have significantly impacted the practice of
Cytopathology. Dr. Erozan has been a leader in
the area of fine needle aspiration, one of the
major new areas in Cytopathology in the last
twenty-five years. His research interest in
pulmonary pathology has involved the application
of molecular probes to cytologic specimens. His
papers have been published in significant
journals of his specialty and he has been an
Associate Editor for Acta Cytologica since 1992.
Dr.
Erozan has been an active member of the American
Society of Cytopathology since 1977, the premier
organization for his discipline. Over the years,
he has served the Society in multiple capacities
including President. His on-going commitment to
the Society has been demonstrated through his
membership or chairmanship of the many society's
committees. He received the Society's highest
honor in 1997, the Papanicolaou Award.
So
much of his career has been dedicated to teaching
it seems only fitting that we create this
fellowship to honor him. Endowing a training
program in Cytopathology at Johns Hopkins will
perpetuate Yener Erozan's legacy.
Endowment
generated income will make an enduring difference
in the lives of our Cytopathology fellows and
help to secure the future of our training
programs. The Yener S. Erozan Fellowship in
Cytopathology emphasizes the diagnostic, teaching
and clinical research activities that are his
life. Please join us as we celebrate the
achievements of our mentor, colleague, and friend
by supporting the fellowship in his honor.
"Ever
patient, ever perceptive, both at the microscope
and in human relationships. Any student or peer
who has had the privilege of working with this
fine pathologist would surely agree."
- Arline Howden, Ph.D. (Hon)
Chief Cytotechnologist and Educational
Coordinator, Emeritus
"Selflessly,
he always takes time to answer your questions and
guide you to the answers. He is never too busy.
Dr. Erozan's absolute love and enthusiasm for his
craft is what initially attracted me to
Cytopathology. The moments I most treasure
spending with him have been at the multi-headed
microscope - there you are in his fascinating
world; a world of jumbled up cells and tissue
fragments. A world that at first seems so
puzzling and strange - crinkled nuclei, wispy
cytoplasm, chromocenters, gland-like formations,
shish kabobs, clumped chromatin..... And, when
you start to put the pieces of that puzzle
together for yourself and begin making diagnoses,
his face beams with the joy and pride of a father
whose child has just learned to ride a bicycle
without the training wheels.
- David M. Steinberg, M.D.
Fellow '00 in Cytopathology
"
A great friend, a good listener with an amazingly
patient personality. He is always there to help,
to advise, to guide, and to rescue. He is
passionate about Cytopathology, having devoted
his entire life, in furthering the subject at all
levels from the medical students to the certified
experts in this field. He has been the biggest
attraction for me in the field of Cytopathology
since my early years in Pathology."
Syed
Ali, M.D.
Assistant Professor
" Dr.
Erozan has mastered the intangible balance
between a careful conservative approach and the
confidence to render and defend the most
difficult definitive diagnosis. Amazingly, with
all of this wisdom and experience at his command,
he will time after time put down what he is doing
to look at a case, listen to a story, and offer
advice. When he agrees with my opinion, I am
reassured and strengthened, taking another small
step toward that goal of skilled diagnostician
that we all strive for."
