Clinical Background: Adenoviruses cause a variety of diseases that range from localized, self limited illness to disseminated, fatal infections in immunocompromised patients. Adenoviruses infect and replicate in many cell types and body sites including the respiratory tract, eye, GI tract, urinary tract, and liver. Diseases associated with adenoviruses include epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, pharyngitis, pertussis like syndrome, pneumonia, acute hermorrhagic cystitis, gastroenteritis, and hepatitis.
