Clinical Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) can cause clinical presentations ranging from an infectious mononucleosis-like disease in healthy children and young adults to life threatening pulmonary, hepatic, central nervous system, hematopoietic and/or ophthalmologic disease in immunocompromised individuals. Specific CMV neurologic syndromes in patients with HIV include subacute polyradiculomyelopathy, peripheral neuropathy, encephalitis and myelitis.
