Clinical Background: Enteroviruses (67 serotypes) cause a variety of clinical syndromes. The most serious of these infections affects the central nervous system resulting in both meningoencephalitis and poliomyelitis. Infection in neonates can affect multiple organs in disseminated infection. Diagnosis of enteroviral infection by culture is slow and limited to those which can replicate in available cell types.
