Clinical Background: The central nervous system (CNS) glial tumors, astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma, can be extremely difficult to distinguish by standard histopathologic analysis.

Loss of chromosome arms 1p and 19q is highly correlated with the diagnosis of oligodendroglioma.

1p19q LOH is also strongly predictive of a favorable response to chemotherapy and a prolonged overall survival.

Isolated LOH of 1p without 19q LOH is a genetic feature predictive of an intermediate chemotherapeutic response and survival.
