The Pathology Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory offers state-of-the-art clinical molecular testing for leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, cancer predisposition and a number of hematologic mutations associated with disease.

Our tests are based on the latest research-based knowledge and provide initial diagnostic information, detection of residual disease following therapy, and assessment of disease risk for inherited conditions.

Founded in 1986, the laboratory has more than a decade of experience in the field of molecular diagnostics of cancer. More than 1,000 tests a year on DNA and RNA extracted from a variety of specimen types, including peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, amniotic fluid and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue. Our tests range from simple, routine PCR amplifications to complex tests translated from cutting-edge research findings to clinical utility.

Laboratory services and consultation services from experienced faculty members are available to external users. For information see the consults page or contact:

The laboratory is directed by Karin Berg, MD, MS an Anatomatic Pathologist with subspecialty training in Molecular and GI Pathology from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Berg is interested in gene expression analysis using oligonucleotide arrays, and hematologic malignancy minimal residual disease testing.

Constance A. Griffin, MD, recently passed the directorial position to Dr. Berg. Dr. Griffin remains an associate director of the lab and continues to be the Director of the Cytogenetics Laboratory. Dr. Griffin is an oncologist and cancer geneticist with internationally recognized expertise in the cytogenetics of solid tumors.

James Eshleman, MD, Associate Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, is a board-certified clinical pathologist with extensive experience in the areas of molecular biology of colorectal carcinogenesis and microsatellite instability.

Kathleen Murphy, Ph.D., MT (ASCP) is the most recent faculty addition to the laboratory. She takes on the role as Scientific Director.

The laboratory is staffed by four Medical Technologists with specialized molecular biology training; Micheal Hafez, MT, (ASCP), Betty Williams, and Lisa Cooper. Mr. Patrick Pearson performs the pivotol job of specimen intake.
