The
polymerase chain reaction (PCR) allows a single, small, specific area
of DNA to be copied numerous times. The process prevents researchers
from looking for "a needle in a haystack"; one small area of
DNA in the whole genome. Instead, using PCR they can make a whole haystack
of copies of the small portion of DNA they are looking for.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) allows a single, small, specific
area of DNA to be copied numerous times. In Real-time PCR, the
accumulation of PCR product is detected in "real-time" (as it happens)
by using a fluorescently labeled probe and the 5'-3' exonuclease
activity of Taq polymerase. The technique is highly sensitive and can be
used quantitatively.
