Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE)Every cell type must express thousands of types of genes in order to survive and perform its intended functions. In the past, most studies of gene expression concerned only one or a few genes at a time, giving an incomplete picture. New techniques such as SAGE now allow determination of the level of expression of tens of thousands of genes simultaneously. It is hoped that SAGE may provide an efficient means to identify promising new diagnostic markers and to give us insights into what governs the aggressive behavior of cancer cells.
