About Mike
I have always wanted to do something that I really excelled at. From early on as a teenager, I looked to the obvious area of sports. It was in college that one of my best friends got me involved in bike-riding. Whenever time allowed we were in the mountains of Western Maryland or we would take long tours on the Eastern Shore, which turned out to be some of my most memorable experiences. Whenever I was on a bike, I could lose myself in the scenery and just focus on the ride, forgetting momentarily the stresses of the day.
I work in the Department of Pathology at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions under Dr. Anirban Maitra researching the molecular mechanisms of pancreatic and biliary cancers. I love working on cancer, especially pancreatic cancer because it is such a terrible disease. Dr. Maitra's lab offers me a lot of freedom to pursue ideas and hunches that I get while working. Sometimes they work while others result in a dead end. I know that our lab is going to make big strides in better understanding these diseases. I also know the cure is out there, we just have to look in the right place. Here at Hopkins great things are being done to better understand this disease, but in order to stay on the cutting edge and continue to move forward we need money to continue this invaluable research.
That is why I decided to bike cross-country for pancreas cancer research - to combine my love for biking and to bring awareness and funds that are much needed to fight this terrible disease.
